Celebrities to Wear Black At BAFTAs 2018

express.co.uk: BAFTAS 2018: Guests are expected to wear a black dress code this year, in solidarity with the Time’s Up movement. The same statement was made at the Golden Globes in the US.

This year, the ceremony will be hosted by actress Joanna Lumley, 71, for the first time. Previously, the evening had been hosted by Stephen Fry, 60, for 12 years in a row. Guests at the BAFTAs ceremony have been requested to wear black to the event.

This means a sea of black dresses and suits will replace the usual rainbow of colour of the BAFTA red carpet.

But why will guests wear black to the BAFTA event this year?

It is because of an open letter written by the Time’s Up movement, which takes a stand against sexual harassment.

The letter was published in Hollywood Reporter, and asked the attendees “to join hands with people across all industries who have experienced inequality and abuse” through wearing black. A number of guests, including Rochelle Humes, Emma Thompson and Keira Knightley, are said to be doing just that.

At the Golden Globes in the US in January, guests did exactly the same thing of wearing black. Celebrities including Reese Witherspoon, Kate Hudson and Angelina Jolie wore black for the event, with few exceptions.

Many, including Claire Foy and Justin Timberline, also wore Time’s Up pin badges on their outfits.

But will Kate Middleton, Duchess of Cambridge, also wear black to the BAFTAs ceremony?

It is said the royal has a dilemma to face with regards to the dress code. Because royals are expected to be politically impartial, the rules may force her to wear a colour so as not to be seen to take a side.

However, will this mean she is forced to ignore the feminist Time’s Up movement? It is yet to be seen what she will choose to do.
